Flight Training Best Practices

Many people know that the most essential part of becoming a pilot is flight training, but when you’re in just for the sake of being a pilot, there are some best practices to keep in mind.

These practices will help you expedite your training, keep safe, and make the whole experience more enjoyable.

Safety First

First things first, safety should always come before everything else. If at any time during flight lessons you feel even slightly uncomfortable about what you’re doing, let your instructor know.

It’s important to remember that many of the decisions you make during training affect not only yourself but also other people around you. You are responsible to everyone who also has a stake in your training and career as a pilot.

Studying on Your Own

Practice your flight checklists at home. Make your trip lessons run more smoothly by converting your checklists into habits. This is also an excellent opportunity to get to know the layout of the cockpit. If you have a photo or a poster of the cockpit from your aircraft, study your checklists with it facing you. You’ll be sure to take in all the little details about your cockpit this way.

Visualization Training

Another wonderful opportunity you have as a student pilot is visualization training. In fact, this is an excellent strategy for pilots of all levels. Visualizing yourself flying an aircraft successfully can help you to be more confident.

During visualization training, try thinking about what it would be like if something goes wrong. Try imagining your recovery from engine failure or an emergency landing. This is a great way to ensure that you’ll be prepared if something happens in real life.

It’s All About Enjoying

You may get caught in a rut while you are on your flight training journey. Be sure to spice up your training with a little enjoyable flying. Always keep in mind why you wanted to take flight lessons in the first place, so it’s your decision to make them enjoyable. Go out and fly to a fun destination or explore another part of the country you’ve never been to. Just have a good time!

Make a Plan

Planning your training will help you track your progress, set goals, and make sure there aren’t any unnecessary delays along the way.

Having clear goals is particularly helpful if you plan on entering the workforce as a pilot. If you’re not progressing quickly enough in your flight lessons, it may be time to adjust your training schedule.
